Our Design Process - UK Garden Design Consultancy
Following on from an initial telephone conversation, a site visit is arranged in order to view the garden and discuss the client’s requirements which include time scale and budget. This information will develop into the design brief, the overall concept and design of the garden. Contact us now to organise your initial consultation.
A full site survey is taken, either by a specialist landscape surveyor or by WM Garden Design depending on the scale and complexity of the site and intended project. This will include full site measurements, levels, soil samples, photographs and observations on the site. These details will be drawn up on a scaled Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawing.
An initial outline design is developed and a set of presentation drawings are drawn up based on the brief and site analysis. A colour sketch plan along with additional 3D drawings and mood board images help the client to envisage the proposed design.
When the client is happy with the proposals, a highly accurate and detailed plan is drawn up in CAD. This includes setting out plans, construction drawings and specifications on which the landscape contractor can base the quotation. This stage of the process is crucial for the contract to go out to tender.

We can help you find and select a suitable contractor, and obtain quotations. Once construction is underway, we can visit the site regularly to ensure the project is running smoothly. This can include ensuring that any agreed amendments are clearly documented, and providing an independent opinion on interim valuations and completion.
Planting plans can be prepared as part of an overall redesign, or for an individual border to be replanted in an established garden. We source the plants from specialist nurseries, and produce a maintenance schedule. Setting out notes on the future care and maintenance of all the plants is also provided.
We can source the finishing touches for your garden, from pots and planters to furniture and cushions. A bespoke feature may fall under the landscape contractor's remit, in which case we will draw up all the necessary details. In the case of a specialist feature - a sculpture perhaps - we can liaise with the artist or manufacturer on your behalf.
Lighting not only extends your use of the garden, it introduces a whole new character. We can devise a lighting scheme for your garden, including recommending specific light fittings, and liaise with the electrician over installation.
As the garden evolves we offer ongoing advice on design, styling and planting. A garden is an organic evolving space, and needs some ongoing attention and care. We can help you review your garden annually or seasonally and arrange remedial or developmental work as required.
